Biking and People

I feel like when you're bike touring, or going all out doing some kind of activity that requires you to dress up, people tend to be more open and interested in what you're doing (unless it's a fantasy game involving dragons in some way).
So along the way we met some great people, some for only 5 minutes, some a bit longer who either helped us out or just shared a laugh.

  • The medieval wedding party. I was lagging a little behind after a late start so I caught up with the rest of the group at this place. Along the path a ways after Bernau we ran into a medieval-themed wedding party. The guy serving drinks had stopped them on their bikes and poured honey wine into their mouths. When I got there they were shooting arrows at an apple in the rain at twilight. I was immediately served a large glass of honey wine for my efforts.

The temperatures have dropped significantly in Berlin. So have the number of hours in the day. It's hard top be motivated to do a long distance ride when the thermometer hovers around 0 the entire day. Outside of getting around town and to work I sadly am impatiently waiting until next spring by sitting on a spinning bike at the gym. But! That's why we had to go south to seek fairer skies and bike ride. Now we find ourselves on the hilly Greek island of Aegina, with rented bikes. We arrived yesterday in the port, quickly found the nearest bike shop and rolled away on two rickety mountain bikes. The adventure begins again! We rode through the center of the island-up and down and up and down. I thought it would be sparsely populated but there were villages and houses most of the way. The Final Days in Managua - Saturday

 From One Activity to the Next:     My couchsurfing host, Dorian, is an artist and graphic designer. He works for the government cultural ministry and promotes and studies visual arts around the country. He showed me a wide variety of artwork from Nicaragua, from Leon to Bluefields on the Caribbean coast. There is a huge variety of art and influences packed into such a small space. He had a plan in his head and I was fine to go along with it and let someone else be in the driver's seat for a while. We started the day with a breakfast of Nacatamales, traditional Nicaraguan style tamales - corn meal filled with pork and potatoes and wrapped in a banana leaf. We picked them up from a house just around the corner from his.
